Niña Pastori wins the 2009 Flamenco Latin Grammy.
Niña
Pastori wins the 2009 Flamenco Latin Grammy. And she has done so with
the album in which she has come closest to the cante flamenco,
‘Esperando verte’. In this album, for the first time in her career, she
has decided to sing in such pure flamenco styles as the “soleá” or the “minera”,
accompanied only by the touch of guitar players such as Diego del Morao
or Josemi Carmona.
As she explained in an interview with Flamenco-world.com, “after
recording ‘Joyas prestadas’, I wanted to look inside of myself and
search for my roots, for my early days, and for the way in which I began
singing”. Her repertoire also includes “fandangos” from Huelva,
“alegrías” and “bulerías”, as well as songs in her more usual
flamenco-pop style with “rumbas” or “tangos”, such as the one which
gives name to the album.
In previous editions of the awards, Niña Pastori had to compete with
latin stars such as Shakira in the general pop category. In this tenth
edition of the Grammy Latino, held in Las Vegas on 5 November, the race
for the flamenco award also included the cantaores Enrique Morente and
Carmen Linares, guitar player Vicente Amigo and also Miguel Poveda with
his “copla” album. India Martínez, who competed in the best new-comer
category, Chaboli as a producer, and Ojos de Brujo for their ‘Aocaná’,
were also among those who did not receive an award on this occasion.
